Letter: Please name the rodeo grounds after Bob Dean
Calder W. Chapman

To the editor:

Williams continues to be a nice small town in northern Arizona. There are a lot of new faces when you travel through the business district.

Looking back, you remember Jack Dent, school board member, and off and on the commander of the VFW post. He was very famous for his barbecue events on the 4th of July. He was so reliable and dependable. His big family has been an asset to Williams for years. We hope somebody will continue his barbecue events as a tradition on the 4th of July so we can continue to be the friendly community we were then. Jack was a great family man and he also saw that everybody else's family had a great living also.

Along with this, I would like to see Bob Dean have the rodeo grounds named after him. He was all over the state bringing fun-filled rodeo events to Williams which thrilled many people throughout town making it a better place to live. I remember him walking around with a shovel in his hands moving dirt from one place to another, making the rodeo grounds better. He made our community known throughout Arizona and he certainly helped our economy. His wife Peggy certainly added to Bob's bringing the best rodeo available.

Walking by the Bill Williams statue on the west end of town, and the park there, brought many memories of the times that Linda Pettit was working around Williams saying 'hello' to everybody she met. The last time I saw her, she was on the roof of a house she was building and she almost fell off just waving hello. That was Linda. Linda raised a big family with her husband Jim and helped the Williams population. It seems to me that the little park in front of the Bill Williams statue should be called the Linda Pettit Park. She was a real asset to everyone she knew.

Now, if you want a gun salute or a military funeral, you should call Perico. He was always there if you needed a sign painted. His signs are all over Northern Arizona much to the enjoyment of the area. He is very friendly with everyone who appreciates him. His remarks can be caustic at times but are always to the point.

It is hoped that the City Council will consider naming the rodeo grounds for Bob Dean and the little park after Linda Pettit because of the spirit that is embodied here.

Williams is such a nice community.

Bob Dean has not been in charge of the Rodeo Grounds, in the recent past.

Pretty sure it was at one time, but Bobby told them he didn't want it named after him any more.

I was under the impression a few years ago that the Rodeo Grounds were indeed named for Mr. Dean. Perhaps it is, but just isn't visible for whatever reason? I absolutely agree with the writer, the facility should be the Bob Dean Rodeo Grounds and signed as such.
