Guest column: District evaluates high school's open campus policy
Rachel Savage
Williams Unified School District Superintendent

Greetings Williams parents and residents,

This is my second Superintendent Community Column. My goal with these columns is to increase connections and transparency within the community and to provide information on issues of interest.

My November column is about an issue that the district governing board and school administration team is currently reviewing. We are taking a hard look into the positives and negatives of high school open campus. Currently, all high school students have the option to leave campus during lunch. WHS has always operated with an open campus. However, with the drastic changes in national school safety we want to ensure that we continue to make decisions for our students that are appropriate in these ever changing times. The school board has instructed the administration to form a committee, seek parent and community input, and to research the following factors influencing open campus: student safety, student nutrition, student spending at lunch, proper supervision, impact on local business, littering, student transportation safety, and effective use of school time.

There is now an active button on our school district website regarding the topic of open campus. The website address is: www.wusd2.org. The button will ask individuals to choose from the following statements that best represents what they feel is appropriate regarding high school open campus:

1. Closed campus for all students in grades 9-10 (freshman and sophomores only)

2. Closed campus for all students in grades 9-12

3. Open campus for all students in grades 9-12

4. Basing open campus privileges on academics and behavior for all high school students.

Collecting community input will be important. Your opinions are valued and appreciated. Please take a moment if you can, to visit our website and weigh-in on this important school/ community issue.

You are also welcome to contact the school at any time. Thank you for your support of WUSD.
