Vikings finish regular season 9-1, playoffs start Friday

David Yankus

TUBA CITY, Ariz. - The Williams High School (WHS) football team closed out the regular season strong with their third straight victory to finish with a 9-1 record overall. The Vikings went on the road and defeated the Tuba City Warriors (3-7) 60-8 on Oct. 26.

Stellar play by the WHS defense and special teams consistently put their offense in great field position. Williams finished the game with four interceptions and one blocked punt. They scored off of every Tuba City turnover, capitalizing on the costly mistakes made by their opponent.

"Tuba City surprised me, they tackled well and they hit well," said Jeff Brownlee, Williams head football coach. "The score seems somewhat lopsided but that was mainly because of the mistakes they made on offense and the turnovers they had, those cost them points every time. But I was impressed with their team speed, they weren't a bad team at all, I'm surprised they didn't have some more wins then they had this year."

Vikings quarterback Jeff Brownlee finished the game 13 of 21 for 234 yards passing with 3 touchdowns (one rushing) and one interception. Oscar Nunez finished the game with four receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. Running back Joaquin Salaz had 17 rushes for 214 yards and three touchdowns, including a 30-yard interception return for a score. Adrian Solano scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. Coty Baxter added a rushing touchdown also.

Defensively the Vikings stood out as usual, allowing only one score all game, a two-yard rushing touchdown by Tuba City in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter. Jorge Martinez once again led the defense with eight total tackles (six solo), as well as converting on all four of his extra point attempts. Christian Plascencia had the blocked punt, which was recovered by Kohl Nixon.

The Williams Vikings finish the regular season No. 10 in power points ranking, earning them a state playoff spot on the road against Arizona Lutheran Academy Friday at 7 p.m.

"Arizona Lutheran has a great offense and a heck of a running game. We just need to make sure we're very disciplined on defense and maintain a strong hold on the line of scrimmage, and then flow to the ball," Brownlee said. "I think it's a good match-up for us, we've been underrated all year long and hopefully people continue to think of us that way, because that will be to our advantage. We're excited for the playoffs and we know Arizona Lutheran will give us everything they've got."

Arizona Lutheran is at 6036 South 27th Avenue in Phoenix. The Vikings need all the fan support and backing they can get as they enter the postseason and look to make a run.
