Obituary: Doris McCrory

Doris Elizabeth (Oakes) McCrory passed away on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 at the age of 90 after a long illness at Knox County Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

She was born March 24, 1924 in Clinton Township, Knox County, Ohio, to Travie Earnest Oakes and Edna Mae (Graham) Oakes. She was the fifth child of seven.  Her parents, Travie and Edna; brothers, Harry, Kenny, and Edgar; and sisters-Kathryn (Yarman), Patricia (DeGrange) and Margaret (Heighton) all preceded her in death.

Doris's younger years were spent swimming in the creeks, roller skating, and acquiring a love of reading.  She graduated from Mount Vernon High School and also became a member of the Ground Observer Corp with her sister Margaret during the early 50s.

During her child-rearing years, she was a Cub Scout den mother, member of the PTA, and president of the Garden Club. She's cooked for the Head Start and worked at the Ramada Inn (now the Mountainside Inn).

Her life included three marriages:  Robert L. Alexander, Jack L. Banbury, and Jack McCrory all preceded her in death along with her daughter Sharon (Alexander) Jaramillo and son Jack Banbury Jr.

Surviving are her children; Bruce (Peggy) Alexander of Bellingham, Washington; Rebecca(Leonard-deceased) Fraser of Brandon Florida;  Kenneth (Terri) Alexander of Williams, Arizona; John Banbury of Cottonwood, Arizona & Christina (Derek) Call of Surprise, Arizona with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Some of her loves were the Arizona sunsets, dancing, socializing, giving hugs to her grandchildren, shopping garage sales and the old black and white movies.

She has been a professional musician's wife, a military wife and a beloved wife. May angels give her comfort and peace so that she will rejoice as she embraces her family on the other side.

A graveside service for Doris will be held at a later date in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Doris Elizabeth McCrory.
