WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Jessica Marie Buvik, 21, of Chino Valley, has been selected as the 2011 Williams Labor Day Rodeo Queen. She is the daughter of Tom and Julie Buvik.
Buvik attends Yavapai College in Prescott. She plans to earn a bachelors degree in physical therapy following graduation and work on an Air Force base helping injured troops that return home.
"In my spare time I love riding my horse, reading and spending time with my friends and family. I have enjoyed my past experiences as rodeo royalty," said Buvik. "I have developed a deep love and respect for the great sport we call rodeo and the families that live it. I tip my hat to those amazing people whose very values and beliefs in hard work and dedication are what makes rodeo what it is today."
A Labor Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday along Route 66. Anyone is welcome to be in the parade, which will feature rodeo royalty. Walking entries, bicycles, golf carts and families are welcome to line up on South Ninth Street next to Family Dollar at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. There will be no announcer, awards or entry fees. Williams Labor Day Coordinator Terri Beeson is organizing the parade. To find out more, call Beeson at (928) 635-4305.
The Williams Labor Day Rodeo kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Williams Rodeo Grounds. Gates open daily at 11:30 a.m. Food vendors will be on hand during the event offering up Indian fry bread, hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos and ice cream as well as a variety of cold beverages.
The rodeo will begin with mutton-busting and sheep riding competitions for the rodeo's youngest competitors. Barrel racing, breakaway, roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc, bareback riding and wild horse racing are all on tap for the rest of the weekend. Dances will be held Friday through Sunday evenings at the Sultana Bar, 301 W. Route 66. Rodeo royalty will be signing autographs at 8 p.m. all three nights.
Andreya Jo Apolinar, better known as A.J., has been named Williams 2012 Rodeo Queen. Apolinar, 18, of Chino Valley, is the daughter of Andy and Ronda Apolinar.
Apolinar enjoys her western lifestyle.
"I have enjoyed being able to get on my horse and ride out into the sunset from my back door or jump in my Jeep to meet friends and head down the dusty trail to Jerome for a Haunted Hamburger, or through Perkinsville to the river and then to Williams to the beautiful pine trees to go fishing, camping, hunting, Dutch oven cooking shopping, and most exciting, the rodeo," she said.
Apolinar spends a lot of time at the Yellow Pine Ranch near Kingman where she enjoys riding, roping and branding with her family and friends.
"This ranch is absolutely stunning. I am so honored to be able to work with and be taught by some of the best ranch families to have ever worked Arizona," Apolinar said.
Apolinar will start college soon at Yavapai College. She plans to finish her education in Texas. Her career goals are to become a human and equine chiropractor.
"I am so excited for the Williams Labor Day Rodeo from the Grand Entry to the final bull ride. I am honored to represent Williams as your 2012 Rodeo Queen at other rodeos, parades, social events or any other special events that will promote this amazing little community," Apolinar said. "I look forward to seeing all of you at the Williams Labor Day Rodeo."
