Edgar and Nell Brown first met when they were in elementary school in Williams. Little did they know that as the years progressed they would go from being classmates to going steady to being married for 44 years.

The two met when Edgar's family moved to Williams from Peach Springs when they were in second grade.

"We were in the same class," Nell said. "And he was so bashful. He wouldn't say anything."

Edgar added, "I'm still bashful."

From that time on, Edgar and Nell's families became friends, and Nell became friends with Edgar's sister. The two families saw each other often because they attended the same church.

Although they knew each other as young children, Edgar and Nell didn't start dating until they were in eighth grade.

When asked how their first date came about, Edgar said, "Things just happened."

Nell added with a laugh, "I chased him a lot."

After their first date, the two attended dances at their church and later attended the school's junior/senior prom together.

"My dad was kind of strict when you dated," Nell said. "He was one of those you didn't honk at the front door for a girl, you had to rap your knuckles on the door because he didn't have anybody in his house named honk honk."

Edgar agreed, describing dating during that time as old school.

"He'd holler be back in here at this time, 'Yes sir,' and you'd take off," he said.

After Edgar and Nell started going steady in eighth grade, they stayed together throughout school.

"We didn't go with anybody else," he said. "In those days you know everybody understood those things."

And they've been together ever since.

"I didn't have any other boyfriends. I don't know if he had any other girlfriends," Nell joked.

When asked about the secret to a lasting marriage, Edgar answered without hesitation, "Trust, understanding each other and love."
