Williams was one of the stops for a group of 27 bicyclists last week on their trip from Maine to California. The group is called Bike and Build. It's goal is to cross the country in about 77 days, stopping along the way to assist with affordable housing projects.

The group arrived Aug. 18 and left town Aug. 20. St. John's Episcopal/Lutheran Church played host to the group during its stay. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kiwanis, St. John's and Williams Area Habitat for Humanity provided meals for the group. Several Williams residents and the Williams Aquatic Center provided a place for the group to shower.

On the trip, the group spends about 58 days traveling with three days off. The group spends 16 days working on affordable housing projects. Williams Area Habitat for Humanity invited the bicyclists to work on "A Brush With Kindness" projects.

Williams Habitat selected two houses for exterior paint jobs, one on W. Sherman and one on N. Locust. Valspar donated the paint through Habitat. Williams Habitat purchased brushes and other materials.

Most residents of northern Arizona welcome the summer rains, but on Monday, the day planned for painting, the rain qualified as too much of a good thing. Ladders were raised and scrapers were in hand by 6:30 a.m. The folks worked hard all morning, but by around 11:30 a.m. driving rain and lightning chased even the most intrepid workers to shelter.

Both projects will be completed as soon as possible using local volunteers. Information about helping to finish the projects is available at (928) 380-3171.

More information is available at www.bikeandbuild.org.
