WILLIAMS - On April 22-23, the Williams Middle School sixth graders enjoyed two days of field trips to learn hands-on about science.

The first day the students traveled to the Grand Canyon for "Geology Rocks." The Grand Canyon is the only place to see all the different kinds of rocks in one place. The students hiked, identified rocks, played games, learned about wildlife and generally appreciated the beauty of the Grand Canyon. One group saw a deer that was very carefully camouflaged. The rangers at the park complimented the Williams sixth graders on how attentive and respectful they are.

The second day, the students spent the morning at Kaibab National Forest's Clover Camp. Different stations were set up for the students to learn about identifying trees, fire, archeology, map and compass reading and conservation. All of the stations were interesting and provided lots of hands-on experience.

In the afternoon of the second day, the students went to Kaibab Lake to fish. Although only one fish was caught (and released), it was a beautiful day and the students saw a few osprey, caught crawfish, hiked and learned about the different fish native to Arizona.

A huge "thank you" to all the sponsors who made science camp happen for 2009 including the Williams Alliance, Williams Unified School District, Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon National Park Service, Arizona Game and Fish Department, SAMHSA Drug Free Communities Grant, SPF State Incentive Grant, Williams Police Department, Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth, Williams Elementary-Middle School Site Council, WEMS Parent-Teacher-Student Association, parents/gaurdians/community volunteers, Wal-Mart, Flag Tee Factory, Williams High School Viking Grill and Brandon Jackson.
