Logging begins this week on 2,330 acres of Williams Ranger District
Williams-Grand Canyon News

Crews started logging this week on the Kaibab National Forest's Williams Ranger District to reduce the risk of wildfires and to improve forest health and wildlife habitat.

Southwest Forest Products will perform logging operations on 2,330 acres of land near the Sherwood Forest Estates subdivision, which is about seven miles east of Williams.

Logging activities will include cutting down and removing designated trees using machines, piling debris, and completing roadwork to allow for log hauling. The work is expected to continue through September.

Because of the safety hazards from tree removal, heavy equipment operation and log truck traffic, forest managers advise visitors to avoid the area and to stay clear of log decks, since they may shift unexpectedly.

The logging will take place west of Forest Road 25, east of Forest Road 141 and south of Forest Road 102. Logging trucks will use these same roads to access the area.

The U.S. Forest Service authorized the logging as part of the Frenchy Environmental Assessment in February 2003.

More information is available from the Williams Ranger District at (928) 635-5600.
